4 out of 5 Local Lodging establishments in Portugal saw reservations cancelled in the 6 months between March and August. Due to quarantines and more restrictive measures in force to mobility,  Madeira and the Azores suffered the highest number of cancellations.

The hotels in the Algarve recorded a global average occupancy rate per room of 1% in April. According to the largest hotel association in the region, the Association of Hotels and Tourist Enterprises of the Algarve (AHETA), the impact of the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus began to affect tourism in March.

 

Madeira tax revenues jump 6.1%

Between January and April, Madeira recorded an increase in fiscal revenues of 6.1%, both in direct and indirect taxes. During the first four months of 2018, income rose to €237,100,000 as compared to €223,200,000 over the same period a year earlier.

The European Commission has initiated an in-depth investigation into tax exemptions granted by Portuguese authorities to companies operating in the Madeira Free Trade Zone. The EU Commission has questions as to whether these tax breaks comply with EU guidelines.

Local Lodging accounts for 25% of Tourist Accommodations in Madeira

There are approximately 2,100 Local Lodging Units in Madeira, corresponding to about 8,500 beds. There has been significant growth in this type of holiday offering, with 430 new registrations in just the past five months. Despite its strong position in the local tourist market, Local Lodging is not perceived to be a threat to Madeira hotels which continue to perform better than ever in recent years.

Foreigners bought 25% of the homes sold in 2017

Last year, 152,000 homes were sold in Portugal, an increment of 25%. French and Brazilian are the foreigners who are buying more properties. The jump in demand also led to a substantial increase in prices: Lisbon up 37%, Oporto 29%, Madeira 24% and the Algarve 18%.

Local Lodging accounted for 480,161 overnight stays in Madeira in 2016. The Regional Statistics Bureau (DREM) study confirms a growth of 53.3% in this parameter as compared with 2015. 93,067 guests accounted for these visits with stays averaging over five nights. Germans made up 24.7% of “AL” overnights and were the largest national group.

Guests in tourist accommodations increased to the highest level in 10 years during the first quarter of 2017. Madeira’s hotels recorded the strongest occupancy rate (75%), followed by Lisbon (67%) and Porto (63%).  Nationwide, foreign visitors are up 10% over a 12 month period. By nationality, the largest rise came from Brazilians (68%), Polish (40%) and Americans (34%).  Urban tourism is one of the major trends in demand. The country’s security is perceived as one of the main criteria, followed by climate, culture and cuisine.
